Seng Clan 17th AGM on 18 January 2014 at the Dorsette Hotel was a historic event. A new President Mr Seng Chun Guan was elected to take over the helm from the outgoing President Seng Kok How thus bringing our leadership succession plan to the next level.

>Chun Guan is a pilot with Silk Air and is not new to scaling new heights. He pledged to pilot the Seng Clan to break new frontiers. Its certainly a good start to the year of the Horse as we hope to gallop to a successful and fruitful year ahead. Our heartiest congratulations to Chun Guan .We wish him 马到成功.

It was a promise made last year that the 20th Anniversary celebration  will be bigger and better. There was no doubt that the Seng Clan  lived up to its promise because  the event took off in a big way that was  fun, exciting and  memorable.

Theme (四海成一家)

To start off, the organising committee adopted the theme  四海成一家 in Mandarin  from the 2nd World Seng Clan Conference to signify  unity  in diversity and in English Same Seng but Different.

The Shin Min Newspaper carried a full page report on 3 March 2013 on the Clan's history and activities and  messages by the Adviser, Founder President Seng Teck Siang and Past Presidents Seng Lup Chew and Seng Joo How and Current President Seng Kok How.

Celebration Dinner

It was a 20/20 celebration with 20  dinner tables  at Swatow Seafood Restaurant at Blk 181 Toa Payoh. To  commemorate the occasion, we invited our Adviser Mr Seng Han Thong,  MP  for Ang Mo Kio GRC as the Guest-of-Honour and Mr Ker Sin Tze as the Special Guest. Mr Ker officiated at the Clan's Inauguration on 3 Mar 1993 and it was certainly a  good  way to remember him.   

The highlight was a unique giant cake shaped in the form of a peach for the cake-cutting ceremony. Every dinner table had a smaller peach and everyone joined in the ceremony to rousing cheers of  四海成一家. There were performances to entertain the young (magical moments) and the adults (changing costumes). Everyone was all praise for a delightful and memorable evening which will long be etched in their mind.

Spring Reception 2013

Seng Clan was amongst the many clans that gatherd at the Auditorium of the Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Assocaitions and Business China  on Tuesday, 12 Feb 2013 to celebrate the Lunar New Year.

Arriving at 11.30am, the Guest-of-Honour, President of the Republic of Singapre Dr Tony Tan was greeted by officials of SFCCA, MPs, Clans' Representatives and guests. In this speech, the President, SFCCA Mr Chua Thian Poh outlined the plan for the Federation. He said:

"This year, the Federation will continue to unite all members and organise more cultural, social and charitable activities to further create a vibrant and warm Chinese community

 

Firstly, moving forward, the Federation will work towards uniting all Associations and recruiting more Chinese cultural groups as members and expand the reach to the wider Chinese community.

Secondly, the Federation will strive towards strengthening research in Chinese culture; establish a unique local Chinese culture with he aim to carry forward our cultural heritage.

 In addition, we also hope to expand our talent pool and assist all Clan Associations to stay relevant by means of administrative reforms."

Seng Clan was represented by President Mr Seng Kok How and Adviser Mr Seng Joo How at the function.  The event ended with exchange of greetings and a buffet reception.

Seng Clan 19th Anniversary Celebration

It was very much a multi-generation affair as the young and old gathered at the Chui Huay Lim Club on 3 March 2012 to celebrate the 19th Anniversary of the Seng Clan Association (Singapore).

The evening began with a sumptuous and delicious Teochew Cuisine Dinner served by Chui Huay Lim Cuisine Restaurant. President Mr Seng Kok How gave his report on the activities for year with a power point presentation.

The highlight of the evening was of course the spectacular musical performance by two of our young Sengs, both brothers Jayden on violin and Derrick on drums. Everyone enjoyed the performance and there were shouts of "Encore".

Not to be outdone, two couples Mr & Mrs Peter Seng Hong Nguan and Mr & Mrs Seng Kee Song serenaded the audience with Teochew Opera and Mandarin songs.

And not to forget, every anniversary celebrations, we also celebrated the birthday of Seng Yu Cheng which falls on 3 March. It was indeed a night to be remembered for a long time . Shirlee Seng sums it up best in her facebook:

2nd World SENG CLAN Conference 2011

The journey began

Seng Clan Association Singapore was represented by a delegation of 11 at the 2nd World SENG CLAN Conference held in Wuhan Tong Shan from 1 to 3 Nov 2011. Led by President Seng Kok How, the delegation set forth on 31 Oct 2011 via Hong Kong and arrived at Wuhan late in the evening for an overnight stay.

The journey was not without its exciting moments. To start off, the Cathay Pacific plane was delayed for almost an hour at Changi Airport runway. When we touched down at Hong Kong Airport, the Dragon Air representative were frantically trying to rush us through immigration so that we could catch the connecting flight to Wuhan leaving in less than 10 minutes time. Needless to say, it was a very hectic and stressful experience.

We heaved a sigh of relieve when we finally landed in Wuhan only to discover that one red luggage belonging to Kok How was missing. After checking, it was discovered that the luggage was still in Hong Kong and could only be dispatch the following day. Dragon Air ground staff were gracious enough to offer a compensation of RMB400 to Kok How for the inconvenience.

The World Conference

From Wuhan, we travelled by coach to Tong Shan and along the way took in some of the sights of Wuhan, like the Hubei Museum, the magnificent Yellow Crane Tower and the mighty East Lake. It was already late in the evening of 1 Nov 2011 when we arrived at St Pauli Hotel where all the delegates were put up. There was a welcoming dinner for all the delegates at the hotel's restaurant.

The next day, after the morning breakfast, we were shuttled to an auditorium in the city area where the conference was held. The theme of this year conference, which in Mandarin, means "Seng across the Four Seas are One Family" was meaningful. As usual, there were rounds of speech by the delegates, exchange of mementos and distribution of a publication.

After lunch, it was free and easy. We decided to take a trip to visit the Yin Swee cave in the area, as recommended by Kok How's Shantou uncle. It was a trip worth every cent as we experienced trekking in the cave, taking a motor ride and then a train ride to see the fantastic stalagmites. I was told the cave is 7 km long. Its a nature wonder (I have posted some photos).

On 3rd Nov 2011, we set off to visit the ancestral temple at Yang Shi, a first for many of us. As the convoy reached the temple, they were welcomed by spontaneous fire-crackers. Then the praying began, country by country, as we placed the lighted joss-sticks in the urn. Before lunch began, we were treated to a spectacular performance by the band. The ceremonial handover to the next province taking over the chairmanship was held, thereby concluding the 2nd World Seng Clan Conference.

Yichang - Ancient City

We journeyed on to Yichang and arrived late at night at Ramada Hotel to the wow of all the members. It was indeed an impressive hotel. After resting, the next day we visited the Three Gorges Dam and the Jing Chiao Ancient City. It was history come to life as we made our way to the fortress where wars were fought many centuries ago.

Homeward bound

Many of us wished we could stay one more night at Yichang as it was a modern and well organised city. But no , we have to make our way back to Wuhan for overnight stay at LogoSan Hotel. Maybe one day, we shall return to Yichang as there are many places to explore.

In Wuhan, we visited the place where the revolution began, known as the red house because of its red brick facade. Then it was a visit to another well known temple with different style of architecture. And finally, no trip is complete without a visit to a shopping centre.

On Sunday, 6 Nov 2011, we left Wuhan on our homeward bound journey. At Hong Kong, 6 of us disembarked to stay in Hong Kong for a couple of days. But that's another story ...........
